Elena Lopez, President and Founder
We all have dreams and aspirations, but Elena Lopez, founder, president, and CEO of HOLA HOSPICE of the ANGELS, is bringing hers to fruition.
Elena is originally from Jacona, Michoacán, Mexico and came to the United States when she was 9 years old. Even at that young age, she had enormous compassion and a great desire to help others.
She attended Charity Christian School and was drawn into the nursing profession where she received her LVN (Licensed Vocational Nurse) license in 1987. As an LVN, she worked at Century City Hospital, but later, after answering a classified ad in the L.A. Times, little did she know that ad would change her life forever.
The ad was for position as an LVN at City of Angels Hospice (COAH) in Hollywood, one of the very first hospices in Los Angeles. She was immediately hired and found her true calling as a hospice nurse. Ms. Lopez never lost that passion, even when City of Angels Hospice closed in 1993. In fact, she became more dedicated than ever to help those in need of end of life care.
After working so closely with patients at City of Angeles Hospice, and due to her reputation as an exceptional and excellent caregiver, Elena was requested to personally work with some high profile individuals in need of care in their private homes. She built some very close relationships with her patients, and thrived in that environment. After the passing of one of her beloved patients, Ms. Lopez made a vow to honor that patient by carrying on the legacy to give compassionate care to those with terminal illness and to one day open up a hospice in her hometown of Michoacán, Mexico.
Elena continued working and gained even more extensive experience in Utilization Case Management and received her certification as a care planning manager from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) in 2005. In addition, Ms. Lopez worked as a case manager for the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, as a telephonic case manager statewide for In Patient Consultants (IPC), and as an LVN Case Manager at St. Vincent’s Hospital and as a Skilled Nursing Facility Liaison for Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles.
All the while, Elena’s dream of opening a hospice never waned, even after all these years. In fact, her passion to care for others continued to grow, and now she is proudly in the process of opening HOLA HOSPICE of the ANGELS, the very first hospice in Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico in her patient’s memory. This is truly a milestone in the healthcare industry for that community, and Ms. Lopez works tirelessly to forge ahead with her dream which is now a reality. Due to her pioneering spirit, individuals will never have to die alone and will live with compassion and dignity.
